First off, if you’ve been in the path of either of those nasty hurricanes the past few weeks, I hope you and yours are doing ok. Having lived through a few of them myself, I know they are not to be messed with and can be terrifying. My heart goes out to all who have been affected.

We’re into all things pumpkin, apple and HOCKEY!!! Yes, Miss Lynne LOVES her Boston Bruins, and McIntosh apples, but pumpkin, not so much. You definitely won’t see me begging for a slice of pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving. It will be, and always is my Aunt’s Apple Cream Pie that makes me swoon!

I’ve been finalizing this year’s 12 Days of Cookies that will start on Black Friday, so be sure to watch for those recipes if you love baking during the holidays. We’ll also have something special in our next newsletter for you all, too! Hugs,

Tip of the Week:

Freeze your meals! A few months ago I made my Lasagna recipe for some neighbors and I put the 9 X13 serving into two separate 8 X 8-inch aluminum pans, so that they could enjoy one that night and then froze the second one so that they’d have it when they moved. I recently did the same thing for us since it’s only Kurt and i in the house and we won’t eat a whole pan of it within a couple days. Making a double batch of a meal and then freezing half of it make for super convenient meals later on. Plus, you don’t have to worry about going out to eat and spending money when you already have food in the house. The only catch, make sure you thaw whatever it is in the fridge the night before you plan to eat it or you’ll just have to allow for additional cooking time.

I’d love to hear any tips you have, and what has helped you be more efficient and organized in the kitchen! If you would be interested in sharing them with all of us, and if I choose to share them in our newsletter, I’ll give you a first-name shoutout! ❤️

I’m baaaaack! Yes, it’s been a while as life has been happening here at the 365 homestead, and work has had to take a backseat.
In between newsletters, Kurt and I made a 26 hour drive to AND from Winston-Salem in just 41 hours. Why, you ask? Because Kurt bought me a leather love seat to replace our 27 year old couch – STILL in really good condition, believe it or not, and decided that instead of waiting for it to be delivered that we’d drive down and pick it up ourselves. Yeah, probably not the best idea since we saw quite a few idiot drivers, a trailer truck literally run a car off into the breakdown lane and avoided a car chase outside of NYC.
The above picture is of Camel City BBQ located in Winston-Salem, NC. If you live within driving distance (haha, no not within 13 hours) or are ever traveling through the area, I can’t recommend this place enough. It was some of THE best BBQ I have ever had after Jack Stack’s in Kansas City, MO. I seriously could have eaten my weight of the vinegar red slaw. The hush puppies were amazing, loved the pulled pork, and their BBQ sauce was so, so good.

Hugs,

Ok, I know I’ve encouraged you to get these before, but as I was scooping the Meat Sauce remnants out of the pot yesterday and into my mouth with a GIR Spoonula, I kept thinking how I’d never be able to do it with just a simple spatula. Nor would I be able to wipe every last drop off the side of the pot with a spoon. That’s why these incredible utensils are the bomb. They’ll make great stocking stuffers for your favorite cook this year, and they come in different sizes and colors, too!

Tip of the Week:

I’ve found the secret to a spotless stainless steel sink! I saw this online and I can’t remember where, but you’re going to need a bottle of Barkeepers Friend and Dawn Powerwash Spray (I like the apple scent). So every night, I clean the sink and drain first with a bit of Barkeepers Friend to remove the surface dirt, then rinse and wipe it all out. I follow that up with a few sprays of the Dawn which removes any greasy residue, scrub and rinse. When I finish, I just stare at it. My heart is so happy because I have never seen a stainless steel sink so shiny and clean. Try it, and let me know what you think!

The newsletter’s a bit longer this week, not because I’m gonna talk your ear off, but because it’s filled with double the yumminess since I missed last week.

Nothing new to report except that Kurt and I celebrated our 34th wedding anniversary yesterday (August 17th). Honestly, I can’t believe it’s been that long. Then on the other hand it seems like it was a lifetime ago because of all that’s happened to us, and the 19 times we’ve moved all over the country. And yet, he’s still my very best friend, makes me laugh like no one else and is the only one I want to do life with.

To celebrate, he bought us a new couch!! We’ve had our old one for TWENTY FIVE YEARS!!! No joke – it was VERY well built, having only had a leg that needed repair some years ago, and most recently a busted spring. It’s made 17 moves with us and watched our kids grow up. So, it’s like saying goodbye to a family member and it’s going to be bittersweet. But, out with the old and in with the new, and change is good, right?

Hugs,

It’s simply a little vessel or storage box to hold your salt. It’s where I keep my kosher salt and it comes in very handy when measuring or just adding some to whatever it is I’m cooking or baking.

Tip of the Week:

Ok, so this doesn’t have to do with baking, but it has to do with our health and is important, so I wanted to share.
Many of us have a hard time drinking water during the day, so a friend shared with me something she’s been doing, and it’s been working well!
Lorie has a small jar on her kitchen windowsill with 8 pennies sitting next to it. Each time she fills up her 18 ounce water bottle, she places a penny into the jar. She also said that her husband and kids have fun reminding and holding her accountable when they see too many pennies sitting on the sill.
If you give it a try, let me know what you think!

I’d love to hear any tips you have, and what has helped you be more efficient and organized in the kitchen! If you would be interested in sharing them with all of us, and if I choose to share them in our newsletter, I’ll give you a first-name shoutout! ❤️

The Olympics are halfway over, can you believe it? What on earth will I do then??? Don’t worry, I most definitely have the answer!
Danielle, my business manager, and my oldest daughter, Alex, who manages my Pinterest account, edits my photos, and other things, are on me about creating some new cookie recipes. So, it’s most definitely on my to-do list for the next week since we’re prepping for our annual 12 Days of Cookies which starts on Black Friday.
I have two so far and need a total of 12. SOOOOO, if any of you have Christmas cookie ideas or a family favorite cookie recipe(s) you’d like to share that you’d allow me to test, photograph and publish (and you’ll receive first name acknowledgement in the post), please send them to me at: 365daysofbakingandmore@gmail.com.
Of course, I can’t guarantee that I’ll use them, but I’d LOVE to see and hear your thoughts and ideas!! Cause you know, sometimes I need a little inspiration, motivation, etc. when I experience “baker’s block”. 😂

Have a great one! ❤️ Hugs,

Unfortunately, there’s no new recipe from Easy Recipes From Home this week.
If you’ve been following me for a while then you know how much I absolutely LOVE my GIR (Get It Right) silicone utensils. The spatulas are heavy, seamless, and all one piece. This means the spatula won’t fall off the handle as I’ve had happen in the past.
Now there’s a GIR Spoonula! It’s SO awesome and is a mix between a a spoon and a spatula, of course, and comes in three different sizes. It’s the perfect solution for scraping and spooning when either of those single items just don’t do the trick. I think they’ll make some pretty great stocking stuffers, too, for those people on your Christmas list who love to be in the kitchen.

Tip of the Week:

Been blueberry picking, going to go or just love buying them at the store?
Sometimes when you want to snack on them it’s hard to tell which ones will be sweet and which are more tart. There’s a solution!
I came across this pretty cool tip called the “Float Rule” which has been going viral lately. Put the container of blueberries (of course, not including the container itself. 😂) into a bowl of water. The blueberries that sink are more dense because of their higher sugar content and are the best ones to eat fresh. The others that are floating will be best used in recipes like these blueberry muffins, blueberry scones, or in this no bake blueberry pie.

I’d love to hear any tips you have, and what has helped you be more efficient and organized in the kitchen!
Hello {{ subscriber.first_name }},

I’m currently watching my beloved Red Sox play the Yankees as I put this newsletter together for you. We beat them last night and I’d love them to be able to do it again tonight and tomorrow, but we’ll see!
I’m super excited for the Olympics!! I watched the opening ceremony and loved that we were able to see so much of the city. I was there with our oldest daughter, Alex, a few years ago, and we had a wonderful trip. The highlight for me though was Celine Dion’s performance. She sounded absolutely incredible considering the health issues she’s been dealing with the past few years.

If you need me, I’ll be pretty much glued to the tv the next few weeks watching most of the events. 😉
Hugs,

I always loved reading books, but at some point, life got in the way and up until a few years ago, I hadn’t picked up a book in quite some time.
The other day my son, Cameron, gave me his copy of The Tao of Pooh, and I fell in love with the first few pages so much that I ordered it for myself right away. Winnie the Pooh has been my favorite Disney character ever since I was little and even as I read this book, I can hear his voice in the conversations with the author.

Tip of the Week:

Do you know how to test your flour for freshness?
This test held true for bakers during colonial times, so I’m thinking it must still hold true today. You can test it by looking at it – take a handful of flour and squeeze it tight. If the flour is good, your palm lines will be well defined when you unclench your fist. You can also throw a small amount of dried flour against a smooth surface, and if it falls like powder, then it’s bad. Thanks to Colonial Quills for the tip!

Hope you are doing well!
Between my birthday and the 4th of July, it was a crazy week and I missed sending out last week’s newsletter. BUT this week we have ALL the good stuff if you’ve missed any of my posts.

I had a wonderful birthday, and bought the Carvel ice cream cake that I have had practically every year since the age of one, and promised myself I won’t be spending $30+ on that 8-inch cake ever again Ultimately, it just didn’t taste worth it. While I’m super bummed, I just can’t justify the price for the value.

We watched the Netflix track documentary, Sprint, and really enjoyed it. We enjoyed watching all the athletes and learning more about them before the Olympics start at the end of the month. Will you be watching the games?

Hugs,

Happy almost July!!
Only 178 days until Christmas. LOL Can you believe it? Sorry, I really couldn’t resist.
Plus I CANNOT believe how quickly this year is going. It’s nuts!!

We’re coming up on my most favorite holiday of the year – 4th of July. I grew up absolutely LOVING fireworks because in my hometown of Wickford, RI, they always had (and still do!) the fireworks display on the 3rd of July. I’m an only child and my parents told me every year that they were my fireworks because it’s my birthday. Of course, when I was little I believed them, not knowing we were really celebrating Independence Day.

To this day, my birthday isn’t complete if I don’t see some on the 3rd. I’m still spoiled, what can I say. 😂 I won’t be baking my cake, nor will anyone else. The 56 year tradition continues with a Carvel Ice Cream Cake – one of my favorites for sure.

If you’re celebrating and spending time with family and friends this Thursday, I hope you have a wonderful time and be sure to check out the red, white, and blue recipes below to add to your menu.

And to those of you in residing in Canada, Happy Canada Day tomorrow! I hope it’s a great one for you as well! Hugs,

Tip of the Week:

Have a fresh recipe that you need fresh ginger for? Don’t peel it with a knife, use a spoon! Yes, believe it or not, the skin on the ginger root comes off more easily just by running a spoon against it as opposed to a small knife or vegetable peeler. It does well with the nooks and crannies. I couldn’t believe it myself the first time I did it.

I’d love to hear any tips you have, and what has helped you be more efficient and organized in the kitchen! If you would be interested in sharing them with all of us, and if I choose to share them in our newsletter, I’ll give you a first-name shoutout! ❤️

Hope you had a good week!
One of the highlights of my week was the Boston Celtics winning the NBA Championship Monday night.
I’m not even a basketball fan and know nothing about the game, but it was super fun to watch and get excited about.

We also had dinner at my mother-in-law’s the other night because three of Kurt’s cousins were in town and his sister came for a visit as well. It was wonderful to see them all, and have some great conversation and laughs. ❤️

Tomorrow morning I’m going to go strawberry picking with my daughter, Emma. I LOVE strawberry picking!! I’m already looking forward to the Strawberry Shortcake I’ll be making for dessert tomorrow night. 😋 I’ll also be making some new strawberry recipes for the blogs, so watch for them in the next few months!

AI.
Since I discussed it last week, have you been more aware of pictures on social media, specifically Facebook (FB), that don’t look right and just look “off” or literally too good to be true?

I also came across this a couple weeks ago that someone had shared on FB. Apparently someone Googled cheese not sticking to pizza. So I did it, and this is what Google’s AI will tell you to do.

I really shouldn’t have to tell you this, but DO NOT put glue on your pizza in order to make cheese stick. Wow.

Let’s have some more fun this week with an AI generated photo of my Zucchini Casserole.

OYE!!! Did you feel how hard my eyes rolled?
Ok, for one there are no red pepper rings in my recipe. How and why they added those are beyond me.
The fork looks a bit distorted, so that’s a dead giveaway that the picture is fake.
The shape of the avocado is one that I’ve never seen before.
And there are two tiny, tiny what I think are jalapeños next to it.
Oh, and that guy. Laying on a table, surrounded by food, with a casserole dish that just came out of the oven on top of him.
I. Just. Can’t.

Again, I ask that you be aware of the food photos you’re sharing on social media, and use recipes from trusted sites so you aren’t wasting your time or money on ingredients and instructions that won’t turn out.

Have a great week, my friend and keep those eyes open!
Hugs,

The cool, crisp cucumbers combined with juicy tomatoes are just the beginning. Add in the crunch of the onions, the saltiness of the feta, and the tangy vinaigrette, and you have one heck of a salad!

Next time you have chicken on the menu, give my Easy Chicken Marinade recipe a try! It is a tantalizing combination of tang and spice that will elevate your taste buds to new heights. This recipe is the perfect balance of zesty orange and fiery ginger– the best chicken marinade recipe that will infuse every bite of otherwise boring chicken with a burst of bold flavors.

With peach season in full swing, I made these Peaches & Cream Dream Bars. Totally light and airy, refreshing and no bake just like 99.9% of my other Dream Bar recipes. these will be a hit all summer long.
Shower caps. They sure do come in handy when you’re taking a shower and don’t want to get your hair wet, but I also use them for something else.
I bought a package of these disposable ones so I could place a couple in the welcome basket when we have guests spending the night. BUT, I also use them to cover bowls or dishes when I’m bringing something to a cookout or potluck. Super easy as the elastic easily clings to the outside of the bowl and stays secure. I also don’t have to worry about tin foil or plastic wrap coming off, and is convenient for recovering, too!
They’re also great when you’re eating outside and want to keep the flies and bugs away from the food. Since they’re clear, you can simply see what’s in the container. If you want to save some money, you can buy the reusable ones, and just wash them after each use. Know that they also have legit elastic bowl covers if you’d rather use those.

Tip of the Week:

I don’t know if you already do this, or have a container specifically for your compost, but I always place a large bowl on the counter in my prep area when I’m making a recipe. This bowl is the catch-all for vegetable peelings, squeezed lemons, herb stems, onion skins, egg shells or whatever else I discard while baking or cooking. It’s just so much easier than stepping over to the garbage (though the few extra steps can add up! haha) and saves me time, too. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Happy belated Father’s Day to all of you father’s out there. I hope your day was a good one surrounded by family and with lots of delicious food!

Can we talk?
There’s something important I’d really like to bring to your attention. If you’re on Facebook (FB) and following recipe sites or in recipe groups, there’s a good chance in the past month or so that you’ve seen the AI (Artificial Intelligence) pictures various FB pages and groups are sharing.

Please know that my fellow bloggers who test, retest, and post their own recipes as well as other bloggers’, are NOT sharing or promoting these fake food photos or the recipes that most often accompany them. I’ve also heard that there are also gardening and nature photos being shared in the same fashion as well.
Even when Googling something now, more often than not, an AI version of your query will be at the top of the page.

I want you to be aware and VERY wary of the food photos you see and the recipes you are choosing to make. I know for a fact that one particular person is scamming woman aged 50+ who use and search recipes on FB. He wants to show you delicious looking pictures of food that are largely unattainable, combined with recipes that are either not complete or VERY inaccurate. These recipes may look delicious and seem doable, but you’ll be wasting your money on ingredients, and time making a dish that in the end ultimately won’t work.

You can be sure that anything I share has been tested, and that I will not be showing my followers AI generated photos of my recipes. I ask that if you happen to see any that are supposed to be recipes from 365 Days of Baking and More that you report them to that particular social platform.
In addition to Facebook, they are now showing up on Pinterest, and I happened to see this one of my Red Velvet Cherry Dream Bars on Instagram yesterday.

The recipe that accompanies that photo on Instagram, says that the cake layer should be the bottom crust, but clearly it’s in the middle of the dessert.

This is what mine look like:

Looking at the picture below, WHAT is up with that woman’s hands?? She’s holding the spoon in her right hand, so how can her left hand be resting on her left arm like that??

A good way to tell if the photo is fake is body parts will be distorted, added, removed or in precarious positions as below.
In food photos, utensils will be bent, warped, odd looking, and the food may not resemble that which it is supposed to actually be.

As you can see from the copy of the post above, these fake pictures are being shared thousands of times, liked and commented on by many. It’s SUPER frustrating, especially since these people are not creating and testing their own recipes. They are stealing the work I and others have done to help save you time and feed your families.

I’m not going to lie when I say I’m really pissed off that this is happening. I do not like the fact that people are trying to take advantage of you for their own greed. I would love for you to listen to what Rachel Farnsworth of The Stay at Home Chef had to say about it in this short video and what Jesse Cunningham is doing to scam people. Please take a moment to watch this video, be very cognizant of where you are getting your recipes from and the sites you follow.

I’ll share a few more AI photos in next week’s newsletter as well.

Tip of the Week:

Don’t like rubbery, tough and overcooked shrimp? Use this tip for plump and tender shrimp that’s resistant to overcooking. Toss 1 pound of raw shrimp with 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Then cook as directed in your recipe. The baking soda raises the pH of the shrimp and prevents the meat from clenching together and losing moisture.

Hello!!

Hope you’ve had a good few weeks. I’ve had some family things that have taken priority in the past few weeks, so haven’t been able to send out the newsletter. But we’re back and all is good! Plus there’s LOTS of good food that we’ve shared on the blog, so scroll down and take a look!

In our ongoing quest to find THE best pizza, Kurt and I had an adventure on Thursday, and drove 1 ½ hours to New Haven, CT to eat at Modern Apizza. For any of you who may live in New England or for those of you visiting, New Haven is one of THE best places in the world to get pizza. I highly suggest trying these places out, especially since they are easy to get to, just off I-95.

Last year we made the same trip, and ate at Sally’s Apizza which was quite delicious and well worth the drive. The original Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana is also there, so you have a choice of some pretty spectacular pizza. There is a Frank Pepe’s also located in Warwick, RI (as well as other places in New England) that we’ve been too, and honestly, it’s not my favorite, so we won’t be going to CT to try that one.

But out of the three, I have to say that Modern was definitely my favorite. The crust is thin and totally delicious, the sauce, the cheese all make for some really fantastic pizza. BUT, Lazzara’s in NYC is still the best we’ve ever had. Gosh, I DO love a good piece of pizza!!

Favorite Product of the Week:

I’ve always had a nice assortment of plastic containers for food storage whether they’re Rubbermaid or the reusable take-out containers from restaurants. However, because I am always making so much for the blog it’s most often too much for Kurt and I to eat, so I need to give it away. When I do, I don’t always get my “Tupperware” back in a timely fashion or at all. So, I’ve now started buying these aluminum pans with lids. They’re the perfect size for whatever I want to share AND the person receiving the food doesn’t have to worry about cleaning and returning it.

Tip of the Week:

Does it just bug you when you go to shake herbs or seasoning out of a spice jar because they either come out too slowly or there’s just not enough when you do shake them? Problem solved! I saw this tip on TikTok this week and it works! Hold the spice/seasoning jar upside down, and instead of shaking it. After removing the cover, hold the plastic top in place while you twist the container back and forth as you would when grinding pepper. The back and forth movement helps to release them. However, this will only work if you haven’t removed those pesky plastic caps as I have. 🤣
