As we’ve never had an issue feeding these Homemade Pill Pockets to our pups, I encourage you to do your own research and make your own call.

A few years ago, I worked as an office manager in a busy vet clinic and I was amazed, to say the very least that so many animals were on medications. I had absolutely NO idea that cats and dogs could have just as many health issues as humans.

I really think that sometimes I live under a rock or maybe I’m just too naive. Or both.

Though our current dog, Logan doesn’t take any medications, he was the perfect model for the picture below. 
I removed the pill and he enjoyed the empty pocket as a treat.

*NOTE:
I previously made this recipe with milk and flour, but have changed it so that these “treats” are better for them.

There have been concerns about the ingestion of raw flour for humans as well as dogs, so I have removed that ingredient and replaced it with ground quick oats. 

Also, your furry friend may have an aversion to dairy. I’ve replaced the milk with water.

Below were our first babies, Brady and Keiser.
They really were the best of friends and had such a great time together. 

We taught Brady, the older one, a lot of tricks and he was extremely obedient.
He was so obedient that one night after the family was outside with neighbors, we came into the house when I later realized he was nowhere to be found.
I opened the front door to call for him and there he was, just sitting there wagging his tail waiting to be let it.

The younger one, Keiser, belonged to our daughter and lived with us while she was away at college.

He looks innocent and wide-eyed, but he was the mischievous one.
Once he even wrestled with a porcupine. He lost that bout.
We pulled 169 quills out of him that night.

Other times, he’s an absolute goofball, reminding me of Willoughby the dog who says, “Which way did he go, George? Which way did he go?” If he could talk, I’m certain that’s what he would sound like.

This guy pictured above was on meds. He needed a pill three times a day, every day for seizures he was having.

DIY Pill Pockets

When I first purchased pill pockets, I thought they were one of the greatest things invented. The dog needs a pill? Hide it in the pocket, smush the thing shut and voila!

Dog eats pill, but thinks he’s getting a treat! Score! It seemed like a win for all of us. My dog was happy and I was content knowing he was getting the medicine he needs to stay healthy.

Then reality set in.

As if spending money on medication for dogs isn’t enough, you need to purchase something to disguise the pill because they most certainly aren’t going to swallow the thing on it’s own as we humans do.

You know what that means? 

$$$$$

This medication for dogs thing can take a toll on your pocketbook.
As much as we all  love our pets and would most likely do anything for them, they can be pricey. 

Some people have success just wrapping a pill in a piece of bread or other food, but Keiser had grown used to these pill pockets! I wanted him to keep having the treats he enjoyed so much.

I’ve made my fair share of homemade dog treats before, like these popular Peanut Butter & Oatmeal Dog Biscuits and Pupcakes.

I found out that it’s actually super duper simple to make your own dog pill pockets to keep my bank account as happy as my pup.

Now I’ve discovered that I can make these wonderful things at home and the great thing is that they work just as well. You won’t believe how stinkin’ easy it is either!

What ingredients do I need to make my own copycat pill pockets?

• water
• creamy peanut butter –
  MAKE SURE that there is NO Xylitol included in the ingredients!! It can be fatal to your pup!
• quick oats

THAT’S IT!

How do I make these at home?

• Place the oats into a blender or food processor to grind them up.
• In a small bowl, combine the water, oats, and peanut butter and mix well. use your hands towards the end to bring it all completely together.
• Divide the dough into 12 small balls. 
• Using the end of a meat thermometer or toothpick, poke a hole into a ball and wriggle it around making the hole big enough to conceal the pill.
• Place the pill into the dough and give your pup their treat!
• They should last 3-4 days when stored refrigerated in an air-tight plastic container. If left out at room temperature there is the possibility they will become moldy. 
• If you have larger capsules, then only divide the dough into 6 balls. You just want to make sure you have enough dough around each pill to conceal it.

Ingredients

• 1 tablespoon water
• 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter
• 2 tablespoons quick oats

Instructions

• Place the oats into a blender or food processor to grind them up fine.
• In a small bowl, combine the water, peanut butter and ground oats.
• Mix with a rubber spatula until completely combined. Towards the end of the mixing, I found it best to bring everything together by using my hands.
• Divide the dough into 12 small balls.
• Using the tip of a meat thermometer, or a toothpick, make a hole and wriggle the utensil around to enlarge the opening.
• Store in a plastic bag.

Notes

• They should last 3-4 days when stored refrigerated in an air-tight plastic container. If left out at room temperature there is the possibility they will become moldy.

We’ve been lucky enough to have had a few other dogs over the years who were just as wonderful as Logan. Like almost all canine friends, they couldn’t get enough of their dog treats.

Giving treats is the best way to reinforce positive behaviors and show love to your doggy, but store bought treats get expensive. And if you have a dog you know how the costs of taking care of our furry friends can add up quickly.

Only a hamster named Costello. 
When I was going to college, I bought a cat and named him Romeo.

Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do to prevent them and wanted him to be at peace.
We sure still miss that crazy guy.
And then a couple of years ago we said goodbye to Brady. 

Now we have Logan, who just turned a year a few weeks ago. It’s funny because he seems to be a good combination of both Brady and Keiser. 
He looks more like Brady and learns commands quickly like he did, but he’s goofy like Keiser and makes those gumbly noises when he’s happy.
He’s been a super addition to our family.

If you’re a dog owner, I know how much you love him/her and how important it is for you to take good care of them.
While we can’t be with them 24/7, we can be sure that we’re doing things to give them the best life possible.
That includes making sure they’re protected from flea and ticks.

What ingredients are in DIY Dog Treats?

• Ground chicken – good source of protein.
  You can use ground turkey as well. Leftover cooked chicken or turkey can also be substituted, but just make sure it isn’t seasoned as we wouldn’t want our pups to have tummy troubles.
• Mozzarella Cheese – cheese contains protein, calcium, vitamin A, essential fatty acids, and B-complex vitamins. 
  Some grated Parmesan is another option. 
  Mozzarella is a low-fat cheese, but if your dog is lactose intolerant, you may want to omit it. 
• Curly Parsley – it is a natural source of Vitamins A,C, and K.
  Vitamin A is important for your pet’s growth, vision and their immunity.
  Vitamin C is an antioxidant and helps with immune support.
  Vitamin K promotes liver health and helps with the blood’s ability to clot.
  So yes, use the kind of parsley you really only ever see as a plate decoration at restaurants.
• Flaxseed Meal – high in Omega-3’s, flaxseed is good for skin and hair, joints, the immune system, digestion and the kidneys.
• Eggs – another good protein source.
• Whole Wheat Flour – contains fiber and protein.
• Vegetable oil – contains Omega-6 fatty acids which will help with your dog’s skin and coat, can help with itching.

How do you make these dog treats?

• Preheat your oven and use a baking sheet. No need to grease it.
• Use a skillet to cook the ground chicken or turkey.
• Mix the ingredients together.
  I found it easiest to mix the chicken, cheese, parsley and flaxseed together before adding the flour and wet ingredients.
• Use a teaspoonful of dough and place onto baking sheet.
• Then I wet my hands and flattened each ball into a small disc.
• Bake for 20 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack before giving to your pup.

Ingredients

• 8 ounces ground chicken
• 2 tablespoons shredded mozzarella cheese chopped
• 1 tablespoon curly parsley chopped
• 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
• 2 eggs beaten
• 1 cup whole wheat flour
• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

• Preheat oven to 350°F.
• In a nonstick skillet, cook the ground chicken over medium heat until completely cooked through, about 10 minutes.
• In a medium bowl, mix the chicken, cheese, parsley, and flaxseed meal with a rubber spatula.
• Add the egg, flour, and oil and mix until completely combined.
• Using a teaspoonful of batter, place onto a cookie sheet. With wet hands, flatten each ball of dough into a small disc.
• Bake for 20 minutes.

I can’t believe my last Furry Friend Friday post was the one for Mother’s Day!

Yes, summer is practically over and we can now resume taking the pup to the beach. 
Public beaches here in South County, Rhode Island don’t allow dogs from May 15th to September 15th, so we’re now counting down the days!
However, we have been able to take him to a few swimming spots. Don’t worry, he hasn’t missed out on ALL the fun.

He and I have resumed our morning snuggles.
He’s MUCH bigger than he used to be and can’t exactly sit on my legs anymore like he used to, but at times he certainly tries!

And if he can’t sit on me then he has to have at least one body part draped over my body.

We celebrated his Happy First Birthday on July 11. 
And he’s been with us almost a year. 
We’ve had so much fun with him and he’s become a well traveled pup.

A few weeks ago, Kurt, Logan and I drove down to Philadelphia to help our youngest daughter, Emma pack for her move to Germany. 
She is now an au pair for the same family our oldest daughter, Alex au paired for two years ago.

Needless to say, a weekend in Philadelphia was a bit overstimulating for him with all the noises, cars, people and such.
He was a wee bit exhausted on the car ride home.
I’d often catch him falling asleep as he was sitting up.

I know that the second Sunday in May can be a very difficult day for some.

Our three children came to visit us in our one bedroom apartment this past week. It was a tight squeeze, but it was wonderful having them all here with me for Mother’s Day.

Being a full-time mom when they were little and Mother’s Day rolled around all I wanted to do was have a day to myself to go Barnes & Noble or shopping.
Now that we’re separated by hundreds or thousands of miles, the best Mother’s Day present is just having them with me.

While they were here we ate A LOT of food native to Rhode Island that they’ve been missing. We also went on a tour of The Breakers in Newport and had lunch with extended family to celebrate my nephew’s college graduation.

We played a lot of cards – Wizard and Cards Against Humanity. Took Logan for walks and were able to go to the beach and visit Grandma.

Yesterday, Kurt and I took Logan on a trail hike and will resume the Saturday hikes we were doing back in Arizona. 
He LOVES to carry sticks (ok, small logs) with him when we’re out hiking. Either those or really LONG tree branches like his real-life brother, Indiana.

Notice the harness on his back? This 80+lb. pup has been pulling us something fierce on his leash, so I decided to buy him the EXPAWLORER Big Dog Harness you see him wearing above along with the BAAPET 5Ft. Strong Dog Leash.
Can I tell you, it’s made SUCH a difference in his behavior when we walk him! Even the kids were amazed at the change!

We now have more control and he doesn’t pull because when we pull him back the force of his harness lifts his front legs up and back. He’s more relaxed having the weight of the harness on him, too even though it isn’t very heavy. It’s truly been amazing and I can’t recommend it enough.

Wow, what a busy few months it’s been, friends!

I seriously can’t believe I haven’t shared any Logan updates with you in almost 4 months, but we’re baaack!!
And what a busy, busy 4 months it’s been!

Yes, after nearly 17 years of living in the valley of the sun, we returned to our home state of Rhode Island and we couldn’t be happier.

Kurt and I decided to leave Arizona and return to our home state of Rhode Island because we missed our kids as well as other family members and friends who live in the area.

Back in 2002, we moved out to Anthem, AZ to raise our three kids in the sunshine and so that we could experience a new part of the country. Well, we did that and once the three of them left the nest, this mama bird missed them terribly.

Our oldest, Alex, is living in Berlin, Germany and our younger two, Emma and Cameron have an apartment together in Philadelphia. Combined with missing them, a yearning to be closer to the water which we grew up on and near along with wanting to experience a change of seasons again, Kurt and I decided to make the move.

Another impetus for our move was Kurt retiring as a chiropractor. After over 27 years in practice, and providing for our family I am thrilled to say he is now assisting me with 365 Days of Baking. He’s helping me with optimization, and he’ll also be writing some posts on health. Look for the first one in the upcoming weeks!

The week before we left, Cameron came out to visit us one last time and we went to Bartlett Lake. Logan loved the hike and retrieving sticks we’d throw into the water.

So, Kurt and I packed up some of our belongings (but gave MOST of them away), and left Arizona. Needless to say, it was a looong trip across the United States with Logan and Winnie, and a U-Haul trailer in tow. 
We drove 40 hours+ (becasue of traffic and weather) in just 5 days. It was both mentally and physically challenging, but overall it went very well and we had no issues!

On the way, we were able to stop at Mary’s new home in Ohio. You might know her from her blog, Barefeet in the Kitchen.

We had become close friends while she was living about 20 minutes away from me in Arizona. So, I was very sad when she and her family moved a little more than a month before we did. I missed them like crazy (and still do!).
On our way out east, I told Kurt we HAD to go visit them, and it was one of THE best stops on the trip!

They have THE most beautiful home and every day I can’t wait to see what she posts from her front porch posts on Instagram. 

Logan was VERY good on the car ride, as was Winnie. 
We made frequent stops so they could get some exercise and do their business. 
I even had Winnie in a harness and on a leash to make sure we wouldn’t lose her.

This was Logan’s “are we there yet?” look when we were somewhere on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Another stop we made was in Philadelphia to see Emma and Cameron. My heart was SO full and seeing both of them just cemented the fact that we’d made the right decision to move back east.

We arrived at my in-law’s in Charlestown, RI the morning of March 11th, and one of the very first things we did was to take Logan down to the beach.

It was his first time seeing the ocean and he was a bit scared of the waves.

But over time he sure has grown to love it.

Then after about a week and a half later, Logan experienced his first Rhode Island snow. He enjoyed doing zoomies around the yard as he has every other time he’s been in the snow.

We’ve since moved into a one bedroom apartment for the next year until we find a home of our own, but we’re still able to get to the beach and enjoy going on trail hikes around the state.

Now that we’re pretty much settled, you can look forward once again to our weekly posts. 
I’ve found the the saying, “absence makes the heart grow fonder” to be so very true. We left the state of Rhode Island thinking we’d never return, but we’ve both grown to have such an appreciation for it because we’ve been away for so long. 
It definitely made “coming home” that much sweeter.

Furry Friend Friday – Dog Farts

The holidays were super busy for us as I’m sure they were for you as well.

I am proud to be partnering with Toyota for this post. We were able to use the 2019 Toyota Sequoia Platinum in exchange while my family was together for the holidays. There has been no compensation and all opinions are 100% my own.

One of the things I was most looking forward to for Christmas was having the whole family in one place for a whole week!
Now that the kids are older and off on their own, it’s more difficult to get everyone together as some of you may know.

Alex, our oldest, now resides in Berlin. She moved there in October after living in Weinstrasse, Germany for a year as an au pair (full-time nanny).
She’ll be an au pair for another family over the next year and is hoping to stay in Germany for as long as she possibly can.

When she arrived back in Europe last week she texted me and said, “it’s good to be back and this feels like home”.
Bittersweet for her momma, but I love seeing my kids happy and if that’s where she’s supposed to be, so be it.
I’ll just have to go visit her every so often.

Emma and Cameron, our two younger children are living together in Philadelphia and working. I love how they’re both experiencing all the things that great city has to offer.

I went to visit Emma last March, months before Cameron moved in with her and really enjoyed the history, architecture, museums, and of course, amazing food.
I NEED to go back SOON!

One of the other things I was extremely excited about was seeing how Logan would react to each of them.

Cameron was the first one I picked up from the airport.
When we walked in the door Logan went right up to him, wagging his tail and brushed up on his legs.

When Emma came home, he went right up to her as well. He then plopped on the ground wanting her to give him belly rubs which so immediately did.

Below is later in the week when they were playing on the floor.

He took to Alex as they’d been old friends as well, immediately making her feel welcome.
And it goes without saying that Winne was extremely happy her mother was home, too.

He thoroughly enjoyed going on walks with them and always wanted to be part of the action.

Logan absolutely LOVED being with his family. Kurt and I were so interested to see how he might react to meeting them and how he’d be to have three extra people in the house for a week.

He handled it all like he’d known them forever and absolutely ADORED all of the attention they showed him.
I’m thinking it might be because some of their stuff is still here in the house, and has their scent.

Facetiming and hearing their voices also familiarized him with them as well, I’m sure.

While they were home, we had the use of a 2019 Toyota Sequoia Platinum.
And oh, man did I absolutely LOVE that car!!

So much so that I may have shed a slight tear when we parted ways.
But not as much as when I had to say goodbye to each of the kids.

It was a wonderful car with plenty of room for 5 adults, a 60 lb. puppy, and luggage!
We were driving comfortably all week to the restaurants, stores, and activities we’d planned.

And I’m not gonna lie, I now want this car as my next one.
It was THE most comfortable car I have ever driven and drove like butter.
Ok, what I imagine butter would drive like. haha

I think the rest of the family enjoyed it as much as I did.

Needless to say, it was so hard saying goodbye to each one of the kids, not knowing when we’d all be together again.
And for a few days following their departures, Logan wandered around the house looking for each of them. It was so sweet.
But I’m already looking forward to how our boy will react when he sees them again.

Furry Friend Friday & Dog Friendly Southern Utah

For last Saturday’s hike, we took this cutie pie to Bartlett Reservoir in the Tonto National Forest.

We’ll discuss this boy’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde moments after we recap this week’s adventures.

Bartlett Reservoir is about an hour drive away from us, so it isn’t a long drive.
I like it because it goes through the towns of Cave Creek and Carefree, so it’s pretty and fun to look at, too!

As I told you in last week’s post, Kurt wanted him to have fun in the water, so we went to Bartlett Reservoir. We’d never been and it was great to experience a new place and a new view of Arizona.

It’s a great time of year to go, too because the place was empty. Except for a few boaters, we practically had the whole lake to ourselves and didn’t see anyone else on the trail either.

We walked on the trail for a while which was a bit challenging because of the quick hills. If you’re not an avid trail hiker, it’s not one I would recommend.

The terrain can be a bit unsteady and slippery on the hills.
The views are pretty, but you can also enjoy them from the parking lots around the lake.

When we got to the water’s edge after walking on the trail for a while, Logan went right up to the water.
He then quickly backed away when he noticed the waves coming towards him. haha

Once he got used to them and the noise Kurt was able to coax him into the water with fetching a stick. His retriever mode kicked in. LOL

A little while later and a bit further Logan found himself swimming for the stick but turned back towards shore before getting it. I think he chickened out. Oh, well. We’ll try again.

It was a lot of fun to watch him in the water. He absolutely loved it!

I loved this shot below.
He’s trying to bring the stick that’s just out of view closer to him, but it didn’t work.
Fortunately, the wind was blowing everything towards us into shore.

Look, Ma! I got my stick!!
He was such a proud and happy boy.

Kurt and I had no desire to hike any further.
We just spend the afternoon sitting on the beach enjoying the time with him.
He enjoyed doing zoomies on the beach and into the water.

There were plenty of sticks and things to explore.

Soooo, onto Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde…

You remember them, don’t you?
Robert Louis Stevenson created the fictional character, Dr. Henry Jekyll who had an alter ego in Mr. Edward Hyde.

Dr. Jeyll was friendly and (ironically!) at night he transformed into Mr. Hyde who had no compassion, remorse and was violent.
Hmmmm….sounds quite familiar, Mr. Logan.

Yeah, this guy is such a sweetheart in the morning, loving on his momma and still laying all over my lap.
Twelve hours later, it’s a whole ‘nother story!

He. Is. Unreal!

Don’t let that sweet face fool you!

Seriously, folks!

Kurt will come home from work and then it’s GAME ON!
I know he’s still a puppy, but he gets in this mode where the look in his eyes will change.
Then he’ll scrunch his nose, make this high pitched short bark and start to bite us.

Oye!

He’s gotten so bad a couple of times, that we’ve had to really “lay down the law”, so to speak.
Don’t worry, nothing that hurts him (no animals have been harmed for the writing of this post).
We’re just a bit more physical and stern to get him to stop.

He understands when Dad means business. Kinda like the kids when they were little.
Raising a puppy is A LOT like raising kids, isn’t it?

It’s interesting to see the way people parent with animals and with their kids.
Some are well behaved, others not so much.

Yesterday I took him his first dog park.
It was rather uneventful.

I took him to Grover Basin Dog Park in Phoenix.
It wasn’t spectacular and I was disappointed I didn’t see any water, but it was a fun change of scenery none the less.

He liked being off leash and chasing the ball.
There were a few dogs there who came up and sniffed him. He did well and wasn’t afraid, but didn’t want to chase or really interact with them.

He let me know when it was time to go by walking over to the entrance from the other side of the park. haha
I was like, “ok then. I guess it’s time to go.”
Yeah, he’d had enough.

Next week, all three of our kids are coming home for Christmas. HOORAY!!!!!
Alex comes home from Berlin, Germany, and Emma and Cameron will be arriving from Philly.
I’m SO excited!

It’s been two years since we’ve all been together. Kurt and I are REALLY excited to see how Logan does with 5 people being in the house instead of just the two of us.

I’ll be sure to post pictures of them playing with him next week.

Yes, you read that correctly.

And I’m honestly shaking my head as I type this.
I’m thinking, “did I REALLY just title this post, DOG FARTS??”

It’s been a pretty stinky week here at the 365 homestead.
I’ll fill you in soon. I’m sure you’re DYING to hear about it, right?? LOL

We’ve really been working on listening and being gentle with Winnie.
As you can see, sometimes he just loves on her a bit TOO much.

She just doesn’t want him in her bubble.
She’s independent as all cats are. She likes her space and only likes affection on her terms.

Of course, I can’t say that I blame her.
It’s her nature. Cats are SO much different than dogs.

How does that saying go, “Dogs think you’re God when you give them a treat and cats think you give them treats because they are God”?
Or something like that. But it’s true!

I took this when she climbed up into my lap this afternoon.
She probably felt it was safe to do so because the big guy was sleeping.

He’s been sleeping practically all day, actually.
I think he’s growing.

Last week I took him to his final vet appointment for all of his vaccines – his bordatella and the titer for his Leptovirus.
He did well with all of his vaccines and never had any issues.
He also weighed 46.3 lbs., but that was over a week ago, so I’m sure he’s even bigger now!

Logan the Golden Dog is still enjoying the morning snuggles, as am I.
Obviously, he can no longer fit ON my lap which makes me sad.

I knew he wouldn’t stay a puppy forever, but it’s pretty darn wonderful when their whole body can fit in your lap, isn’t it?
I’ll gladly take our morning time though.

Ok, now on to the word or phrase of the week, dog farts.
It’s ugly, but it’s ALL he was doing there for a while this week.

He was getting towards the end of his bag of food, so I’m thinking that was probably it. The dog food we give him is Iams Large Breed Smart Puppy. It’s what the breeder started the litter out with.
I am going to switch him to something else eventually, just not sure what.

We very rarely feed him table food because I’m not sure how his stomach will do and I don’t want him to be sick.

So, I’ve been researching dog foods and diets and have honestly become overwhelmed with the opinions. Of course, everyone’s got one and theirs is the best.

Grain-free, raw, yada yada. Who knows.
Right now he’s doing fine, so maybe it was just a little bug or something.

What causes dog farts?

Just like humans, they have gas, too.
And typically it can be caused by a change in diet or from eating something new or spoiled.
Dogs that swallow air, especially if they’re eating rapidly will have more of a tendency to pass gas.
Also, it’s more prevalent in dogs who are overweight, obese or don’t get much exercise.
There’s also the chance that they could have a disease. So, if it continues, and you haven’t changed their diet or know that they haven’t eaten anything without your permission, it’s probably time to call your vet.

I have to say though he was pretty funny.
They weren’t always silent, but deadly. Sometimes he made a bit of noise and even surprised himself.
He’d whip his head around like, what the heck was that?!

So, that’s been life here this week.

Tomorrow we’re off to “find him some water”, says dad.
For our Saturday hike, Kurt wants to take him to a lake, but I’m not sure which one.

Yes, we didn’t have a Logan post last week, so I apologize for that.

This is NOT a sponsored post, I’m just sharing places and things that worked for us while we road tripped with Logan.

Kurt, Logan and I decided to take a road trip to a place we had never been – Southern Utah.
I’ve seen pictures of how beautiful it is up there, so we packed winter clothes (or the few that we own haha) and headed north!

Since we wouldn’t have any family here for Thanksgiving and I really didn’t want to cook a large turkey for the two of us, we decided that it was probably the best time for a little road trip.

We went to Page, Arizona on Monday and stayed there for one night.
Tuesday and Wednesday we stayed in Bryce Canyon, Utah.
On Thursday we were in St. George, Utah and then made our way home Friday.
It was a great trip and Logan did REALLY well, too!

Page, AZ

Our first stop brought us to Page, AZ.
I know there are SO many gorgeous areas to hike in northern Arizona with the Grand Canyon being one of them.
But we’d been there, done that. A few times even.

I’ve seen beautiful pictures of Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, the Wave, Monument Valley and more on Instagram and absolutely fell in love with the scenery.
I was stoked when I mentioned to Kurt that I thought we should go up to Bryce Canyon for a few days to do some hiking and he agreed!
It was definitely my intention to stop at a few of these places on our way up north.

BUT…

Are these places Dog-Friendly??

Since we now have this wonderful guy and we’re wanting him to hike with us there was no question as to whether or not he was coming with us. We just had to find things to do and places to stay that were dog-friendly and could accommodate Logan.

You may not be able to head to the sights you have your heart set on and it may be discouraging, but it’s definitely doable if you do some searching. There are so many wonderful sites and apps now that can help you plan a trip with your beloved pooch.

After doing my research, I found that each national park has different requirements for dogs.
In general, they are welcome as long as they are on a leash that is no longer than 6 ft, and that they are allowed to be on paved surfaces and in developed campgrounds.

There are some very dog-friendly parks across the U.S. which can be found here. If you’re interested in exploring others, just go to the park’s website and do a search and they’ll give you the specific regulations and the trails you are able to hike with them.
This is a great national park site with lots of helpful information, too

Of course, it goes without saying that by being a great dog owner you’ll pick up after your pet, bring plenty of water for them, be aware of the temperature when you’ll be hiking, and not require them to do more than they’re physically able. These guys and gals get thirsty, hot, cold, tired and exhausted just like us!

HORSESHOE BEND

When I saw that Horseshoe Bend was in Page, AZ  AND that it was dog-friendly, we were going no ifs, ands or buts!
And it didn’t disappoint!

If you’re ever in the area, I highly suggest it! I was so very excited to check that one on my bucket list.
We went on Monday just about sunset and it was very busy!

Of course, that’s going to be one of THE most popular times to be there because the setting sun is glorious and the colors are amazing. If you don’t mind a crowd and lots of people trying to get THE best shot for their Instagram then you’ll be fine.

Also, parking is a bear. While I believe they are increasing the size of the small parking lot, the only other parking is on the two-lane road at the trailhead. It can be challenging with traffic, so just make sure your dog is well restrained.

For dinner, we went to a dog-friendly restaurant, Big John’s Texas Barbecue. With a dog, you’ll need to sit on the outside patio, but there are plenty of tables and there were even heaters because it was chilly. The service was fantastic, food was really good and they even spoiled Logan giving him a bowl full of water and a pork bone to chew on so we could eat dinner without interruption.

LA QUINTA INN & SUITES PAGE AT LAKE POWELL

We stayed overnight at the La Quinta Inn & Suites in Page and it was marvelous! It was a brand new hotel, extremely dog-friendly, and the price for the room includes a hot breakfast buffet.
I would definitely stay there again.

As far as Antelope Canyon which is just a short drive from Page, we didn’t go.
It is not recommended to take dogs because some of the terrains are steep and require quite a bit of climbing. There may be places to board your dog in Page for the day, but we didn’t feel that we had to get to Antelope Canyon so didn’t look into it.

Bryce Canyon City

Wow.

That was my reaction to first seeing the “town” and the unbelievable sight of the hoodoos in the canyon.
The two days we were there was quite the experience.

Best Western Plus Ruby’s Inn

Not the greatest place to stay in town, but unfortunately one of the only ones, and it is dog-friendly.
I really thought Bryce Canyon City would be a bustling area with a slew of hotels and restaurants to choose from, but it’s not, especially in the offseason.

Yes, it was quite chilly up there with temperatures reaching mid 40’s during the day and low teens at night, so I can understand why people wouldn’t hike this time of year.
Logan was none too happy that I put a sweater on him, but doggone it it was cold at night!!

But still, a few more food options than the hotel restaurant (which was just eh) would have been great.
There is a “grocery store” / souvenir shop attached to the hotel, but because it’s basically the only one in town the prices are exorbitant.

The hotel was ok, nothing special. We stayed in the Alpine Lodge away from the main hotel because those rooms were able to accommodate pets. It was nice we were able to take Logan right outside instead of walking down any hallways and he actually saw his very first deer both nights we were there!

Bryce Canyon National Park

Pets are not permitted on unpaved trails in Bryce Canyon National Park, but they can hike the Rim Trail with you as long as they are on a leash. It is a paved trail between Sunset Point and Sunrise Point and the views are absolutely stunning!
We were very happy that we chose to go this time of year because even though some parts of the park were busier, it was nice to not run into too many people while hiking with Logan. I can’t imagine how busy that area is during the warmer months!

So on Tuesday morning, we hiked the Rim trail with Logan both ways which made it about 3 miles or so. This allowed us to go back to the hotel room, have some lunch and play with him a bit more before we crated him so that Kurt and I could do a short hike on our own.

Logan was wiped, so we knew he’d just fall asleep and we’d be able to explore the park a little more. We parked at Bryce Point and went on the trail there which took us down into the canyon a little ways before it started getting dark and we decided to turn back.

It was absolutely beautiful and I was so happy that we were able to experience it. Hiking and seeing the beauty of the U.S is so wonderful.
It was also great that we were able to experience it both with and without Logan, too. He absolutely loved going on the hikes, especially playing with the pine cones. He was so funny!

Kodachrome Basin State Park

On Wednesday, we drove about 40 minutes from our hotel to Kodachrome Basin State Park. And yes, I couldn’t get that darn Simon and Garfunkel song out of my head after originally reading the word Kodachrome.
You’re welcome. haha
There we hiked the Panorama Trail which is dog-friendly and Logan absolutely LOVED it!! The clay was SO soft, and he really enjoyed the exploring.

The trail wasn’t busy – we didn’t see one person and decided to hike the 6-mile loop as opposed to the three.
Again, there were gorgeous views, and cool things to see. AND we exercised with our boy, what’s better than that?

On the way home, we stopped at I.D.K. BBQ in Cannonville, Utah. It was DELICIOUS!! We liked it even more so that Big John’s in Page. The meat was so good and the place is really cute. Kevin and Emily Clark originally started as a food truck and about 6 months ago opened up shop.

I HIGHLY recommend you stop by. You won’t be sorry.
AND she was more than happy to give Logan a couple of pork bones to take back to the hotel. He absolutely did not want us to come near him while he chewed them.

St. George, Utah

We arrived in St. George a little before noon, and decided to take in a hike so that Kurt and I might be able to go out for Thanksgiving dinner somewhere.

Yellow Knolls Trail

It was a great trail with a bit of elevation and totaled about 3.8 miles out and back.
We only saw one other couple who absolutely fell in love with Logan and vice versa, so we were able to let him off the leash.

He fell in love with the sandy clay and enjoyed the hike immensely! You can see from the picture that he was just about the SAME color as the clay. It was so funny!

La Quinta Inn & Suites St. George

We stayed at the La Quinta Inn & Suites St. George and were extremely pleased with our stay there as well. I think we’ll be staying at this hotel chain whenever we travel with Logan from now on. The hotels are clean, comfortable and the staff at both locations was very friendly.

Overall, it was a great first official road trip with the boy. He’s proven that he can keep up with us both and enjoys the hiking. It will be a lot of fun to explore more places with him!

I also discovered an app called Bring Fido. It will help you with dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, and activities. You can even search for dog parks in the area you’ll be visiting.
